چکیده

“In at least one important dimension — school enrollment — orphans are signifi cantly disadvantaged... Although poorer children in Africa are less likely to attend school, the lower enrollment of orphans is not accounted for solely by their lower wealth. Instead, our results suggest that the special disadvantage orphans face is primarily due to their living arrangements. Across a large number of sub-Saharan African countries we fi nd that the degree of relatedness between orphans and their adult caregivers is highly predictive of children’s outcomes.”

Orphans in Africa: parental death, poverty, and school enrollment.

We examine the impact of orphanhood on children's school enrollment in 10 sub-Saharan African countries. Although poorer children in Africa are less likely to attend school, the lower enrollment of orphans is not accounted for solely by their poverty. We find that orphans are less likely to be enrolled than are nonorphans with whom they live. Consistent with Hamilton's rule, the theory that the...

Sexual risk among orphaned adolescents: is country-level HIV prevalence an important factor?

Previous studies from sub-Saharan Africa have found that orphans experience increased sexual risk compared to non-orphans. We developed a theoretical framework for the investigation of determinants of HIV risk and used it to generate specific hypotheses regarding the effect of country-level HIV prevalence on the sexual risk experience of orphans. We expected that countries with high HIV prevale...

Challenges Faced by Households in Caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children

South Africa has seen a rapid increase in HIV prevalence among the general population over the past 10 years, from less than one percent in 1990 to twenty percent in 2001 (UNDP 2002). As the HIV/AIDS epidemic increases, so do the number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). In 2002, an estimated five million people (approximately 12 percent of the population) were living with HIV/AIDS (Stei...
